J895 Electrifying Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla, date unknown.

Tesla was a Serbian American inventor and engineer .

He is credited with discovering and patenting the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery

Marc Jones has July 10, 1856 in Smiljian Austria-Hungary Empire, now Croatia, but Tesla was not Croatian as widely believed but was an ethnic Serbian and his father was an Eastern Orthodox priest.

Though he was famous and respected, he was never able to translate his inventions into long-term financial success—unlike his early employer and chief rival, Thomas Edison. Tesla died unfortunately penniless at the New Yorker hotel in Manhattan letting others make billions off his name and talent.

J319 Havelock Ellis & the Equal vs Whole House System

Using the Equal House

The Equal House house and whole House systems are the oldest astrological house systems in astrology.  The Equal House is based on the Ecliptic, and some astrologers actually call it the Ecliptic system. It has several features:

  1. All the houses are equally spaced, meaning that each house is exactly thirty degrees wide, so it very easy to manually construct.
  2. All of the houses start on the degree of the Ascendant
  3. There are no intercepted houses, as each sign gets its own house, i.e. we equally divide the chart into twelve equal parts.
  4. The tenth house cusp (cusp is the beginning point of a house) does not coincide with the Midheaven. You can see an example of this in the case  of  Havelock Ellis, born in Croydon, Surrey, UK,

Download Havelock-Ellis in Placidus format here

Who was Havelock Ellis

Dr. Ellis was an English essayist and physician who studied human sexual and criminal behavior.  He challenged 19th-century Victorian taboos against public discussion of the subject following up on the studies of Sigmund Freud in Vienna. Many of his books, including his best, The Task of Social Hygiene, are on Gutenberg.org for free.

We do not use the Equal House system because we disagree with its construction — everything thirty degrees and no consideration for the horizon. Nonetheless, the famous astrologer, the late Lois Rodden, loved it.  In Hellenistic Astrology, the Whole House system is de rigeur and the major difference is that all houses start on ZERO and the Ascendant is shows up at the degree within it.

We actually prefer this over the Equal House system, because we think that the Ascendant should not be tied to the first house — which is how you are seen by others.  Confusing the Ascendant and the house house we have found in our studies, is not an accurate representation, hence we typically use non-Ascendant based house system like the Zariel and Morinus and Whole House for Hellenistic charts.

Whole House System

The similarities to the Equal.

  • All the houses are equally spaced, meaning that each house is exactly thirty degrees wide, so it is very easy to manually construct.
  • There are no intercepted houses because each sign gets its own house, i.e. we equally divided the chart into twelve equal parts of thirty degrees.
  • .The tenth house cusp does not coincide with the Midheaven because the Midheaven is typically not Zero. We do not show it on the chart above.

The dissimilarities to the Equal.

  • The Equal starts always at the Ascendant. The whole always starts at 0.

As shown, under the Whole House System, Dr. Ellis’s midheaven is in the eleventh house of the public, which makes sense as he devoted his medical life to public health and hygiene; Venus, the planet of sexuality, is also there linking the two and is the handle to his bucket.

In the Equal House, the  Midheaven is in the tenth house of a career, but Venus is separate in the eleventh house and does not clearly link the two.  Other issues are in the Equal House Saturn is in the sixth house of work and labour; in the Whole House Saturn is in the seventh house of partners and opportunity.

While we can make cases for either, it is really the nuance we prefer, and astrology is nothing but nuance.  For further discussion of houses and interceptions, another thing we dropped as being meaning, look here and here.

The AgBox of Sonny Perdue

Who is Sonny Perdue?

Sonny Perdue, no relation to Frank and his chickens, is the United States Secretary of Agriculture since 2017 and grew up in  a farming family in Bonaire, Georgia. His cousin, David Perdue, recently ran for re-election for the United States Senate for Georgia against a challenge from Jon Ossoff, and lost.

Sonny, born George Ervin Perdue III on December 20, 1946, time unknown, was rectified to a Cancer 04 ascendant, that has the symbol of “a young boy learning the importance of moksha”, also called “mukti.” Moksha embodies the Hindu concept of ultimate freedom and liberation deriving its meaning from mukt or (Sanskrit) “liberation,” i.e. release from the life-death cycle (samsara) of mundane existence. It is also akin the Buddhist concept of nirvana, and often the terms are interchangeably used; but there is a major difference — Hindus believe nirvana is attained only after achieving moksha, while Buddhists believes that moksha is an end in itself.

Perdue has a sixth house heavy chart showing his dedication to farm animals and service. His chart is interesting because it has a bowl opposition between the Sun in Sagittarius and Uranus in Gemini making him a Mars bucket, but on the other hand. one could easily argue that Mr. Perdue is a see-saw temperament because of the rather neat division between the hemisphere right at the fourth house nadir. This is a chart where reading the whole thing, and not just looking at the layout, helps determine his temperament type.

Who is Sonny

Sonny is an  agribusinessman, veterinarian, state legislator, and former 81st governor of Georgia. More recently he has been touring 30 farm states since his confirmation to hear what farmers have to say.

“People believe that folks in Washington D.C. had stopped listening to rural America over the years,” Perdue said of those who came out to his town hall meetings… In fields, dairy barns, machine sheds and front yards, thousands of people turned out for town hall meetings to express their frustrations and offer suggestions.”

Sonny Perdue at his confirmation hearings.

What came out of those meetings is his idea of an AgBox, similar to the 1970’s handouts of cheese, milk and butter to food stamp recipients, except that the AgBox would be  a package of “nutritious, 100-percent U.S. grown and produced food. ” It would contain nonperishable items like shelf-stable milk, cereal, peanut butter, canned meat, fruits and vegetables but it would replace half of those recipients’ food monthly benefits.  How this would be implemented is still under discussion.

                                  The appeal of Sonny

Perdue is a fairly easy going fellow as the division in his chart shows. His Uranus is conjunct Vice President Pence’s Sun, telling us he is more tech-savvy than he lets on — he knows how to use it well though does not openly push the platform. His wife, Mary Ruff, shows up at Venus 20 Scorpio 15, and Perdue has mentioned her as the secret to his success, and also the mother to his four children (Jupiter 18 Scorpio 19).

He has an interesting yod point from his midheaven at 17 Pisces 11 to Uranus. Its foot is at Jupiter 18 Scorpio in the sixth highlighting his varied interest and social duty, and the apex ricochets back to the first house at his first house cusp of 17 Gemini 11 getting the symbol of a “Mechanics toolbox,” highlighting his practicality who uses social engagement as one of the tools to make things work.

This of course highlights his practical application of Uranus towards social problem, showing that while he could have done his tour virtually and just talked on the phone or used Skyped, instead, Secretary Perdue needs to utilize both methods: telecommunications and hands on seeing is believing to make sure that the messenger is relaying the problems accurately — many people cannot vocally express the problem to the ether as well as they can to someone who presses their flesh and stares them in the eye. That has been the not so secret ingredient in politics, and particularly American politics, since the Republic was formed.

  • Line of Vitality sextile
  • Line of Efficiency trine
  • Line of Motivation trine
  • Line of Culture biseptile
    • Uranus sextile ascendant; Neptune trine Mars

Meghan Markle return to Sussex roots

Meghan and Harry way back when

Markle’s great-uncle, Mike Markle was an amateur genealogist investigating the Markle line in the 1990s and he discovered their noble forefathers. Mike Markle discovered their paternal great-great-great-grandmother was New Hampshire landowner Mary Hussey Smith (1823–1908), herself a descendant of nobleman John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, who had been beheaded in 1537 at the order of King Henry VIII because of his closet Catholicism. The Baron’s genealogical chart is here and his gravestone here in Rockingham, New Hampshire. Thus in a very circuitous fashion, Meghan Markle has returned to her noble Sussex roots.

Having established her British paternal ancestry, recent genealogists have now further discovered that Meghan and Harry have a common ancestor tracing back to about 500 years ago in Elizabeth Bowes (1505–c.1572) and her husband, Richard Bowes, son of Sir Ralph Bowes of Streatlam Castle and High Sheriff of County Durham through Queen Elizabeth II’s mother (née Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon).

Meghan’s slave ancestry

As for her mother’s side, Meghan can trace back to a maternal great-great-great grandfather who was a slave on Georgia plantation before being emancipated with the abolition of slavery in 1865 by President Abraham Lincoln. Nothing more is publicly known about this man — his name or what he did after Emancipation.

Today, November 27, 2017 was officially engaged to Harry, the second son of the Prince of Wales. Her engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry was made by Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers and Medallists to Her Majesty The Queen.

Prince Harry, a well-known playboy like his father before him, announces his engagement to Meghan Markle, an American actress.
Prince Harry and Meghan announce their engagement

The pair, who became engaged quietly earlier this month, will marry in spring 2018 and live at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, where Harry currently lives. It is unknown if he will retain his Duke’s title or become the Earl of Sussex.  If he chooses the latter, Markle will return to her Sussex roots. 1 Which before he abdicated was the case, and they were the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Gym suits and showing off

Meghan was born Rachel Meghan Markle on August 4, 1981, the same day, twenty years after, former President Barack Hussein Obama, another person both of mixed racial parentage. As she does not have a public birth certificate, below is my proposed Markle chart. I believe it it works because of the preponderance of Ninth House planets, highlighting not only her long journey not only to meeting Prince Harry through mutual friends, but also her various religious changes: she was raised Baptist, converted to Judaism for her first husband and then became an Anglican for her second. This chart puts her leonine Sun in the seventh house conjunct her Mercury, the lead planet s her fellow Hollywood husband, Trevor Engleson, whom she met through the trade, while the second, her Sun, is Harry which is far more important because this marriage was done on like-minded philosophies.

Rachel Meghan Markle's proposed birthchart -- I could not find one with its Sagittarius rising.
Meghan’s birthchart

Her ascendant is 27 Sagittarius 20,, sextile to her Midheaven displaying Meghan’s ambition, With Neptune right near by she is very much the “actress” she loves the stage and the attention it brings her, but as the first house cusp is exact to her Midheaven this leonine extroversion also bring problems, for she becomes a lightning rod crystallizing not how people react to the Royal family but to her and Harry.

While the acting career was obviously an issue with the Queen, it was nothing like Harry’s uncle Prince Andrew romance with actress Koo Stark, nonetheless her Midheaven conjunct her Pluto shows her popularity which sextile the vagaries of Neptune and Mercury may at times seem a bit too mercenary for many people’s tastes, while others will embrace her in your face bravada.

Andrea Carelli writes about this degree:

I should be tempted to say that everything depends on the native. This much can be said anyhow: there is a lot the subject can do, but it will be no easy task, A woman worthy of the name will not stoop to the tactics of a despised enemy and should count her blessings; because she can make herself very much liked; if she only wants. She has an inborn nobility and sweetness of manners that may win him many sincere friends. Let her be above provocation and not stoop to squabble with those unworthy of her.

Andrea Carelli, The 360 Degrees of the Zodiac c. 1950, Italy.

Her first house cusp, that is how the public sees her through the lens of her ascendant 2 This is a reason we have chosen to go with a house method that separates the two as it gives you more depth to the person’s personality than just the ascendant alone. While the ascendant will show you how the person thinks and reacts to life, the first house will demonstrate how the person is perceived by others thus giving more dimensionality to the chart. has the Sabian degree of “the high school grounds are alive with fresh enthusiasm as the girls appear donning their gymnasium suits” highlighting their exuberance in showing off their physiques. Jones writes it shows the joy in challenges with others and more established methods but negatively warns of being daring just for daring’s sake and therefore lacking judgment.

A Martial Bucket

Meghan though is a bucket with a Mars 11 Cancer 49 (the symbol here is a “clown making merry caricaturing those around her with grimaces and pantomime” and gets the warning of excessive self-gratification). I doubt though whether Meghan will heed this warning, because Mars is in its fall in Cancer, for Mars is far too tough a planet to be in such a harmonious place. It is also opposite her first house, and chances over time more of her willfulness be on display and since it square her Moon, again plays in the rising and falling tides of her personality: sometimes she will be loved and others hated. It all depends upon how the viewer sees her, for Meghan is who she is — it is only the viewer who changes.

Another bit of irony, is Mars is in the house of servants and service, and that is not something Mars can do easily. The Asteroid Hygeia is nearby to Mars, and while Hygeia finds herself welcome in the sixth, also the house of sickness and healing, Hygeia’s emphasis is on “prevention” not “cure,” reinforcing the rest of the chart.

The wedding is announced for the Spring. We wish the happy couple all the best.

#282 Vic’s PM: Benjamin Disraeli

portrait of B. Disraeli from the Victoria & Albert Museum c.1850 by Mr. Chas. Lucy

Dr. Marc E. Jones rectified the PM’s horoscope for his 1954 book, The Guide to Horoscope Interpretation. 1 He obtained the birth data from Alan Leo’s 1001 Nativities. 2  Jones used the Placidean House method; we use the more modern Koch.  The footnotes give you a site where the book can be bought inexpensively. It is also available online thanks to Dromenon over here on the Sabian Assembly site.

      Who was he?

Benjamin Disraeli was a novelist and two-time prime minister under Queen Victoria.  He was also a major proponent of Imperialism – an economic policy where stronger countries dominate weaker ones to obtain their assets (mineral & mining raw products like wool or cotton, or labour either for work working the resources or overseas export to supplement their population.  Though in modern parlance this has been for the dominate country to export finished goods for the weaker country to supply real assets i.e. money, and credit transfers).

It was a popular philosophy throughout the 15th thru 9th centuries and led to great economic expansion for Spain, France, Portugal and Great Britain as it allowed them to broaden their  commercial economic power  & territorial reach.

The political philosophy was challenged by the 17th Century British economist Adam Smith in his classic Wealth of Nations and later David Ricardo, both who argued it had only short-term personal gains for agencies like the Dutch East Indies Co. but was long-term political loss for the Countries.  Their reasoning was the principals 1 Principals are the actors most involved in supporting the political process involved become wealthy, but lazy,  as it creates an aristocratic elite separate from their fellow countrymen and encourages the government to increase taxation while furthering their own power and lifestyle.

Karl Marx wrote against imperialism in the Labour Theory of Value.  The Soviet Vladimir Lenin and German Hannah Arendt both supported Marx’s ideology,  broadening the idea to include all international capitalism i.e. foreign exchange and banking, but oddly enough ignoring the social elite benefit.

                    Jewish Background

Like economist David Ricardo (1772- 1823)  Disraeli was a Sephardic Jew whose ancestors emigrated to England from Italy via Holland. While the family religiously “converted to Anglicanism”  they kept their Jewish cultural identity. Disraeli married Mary Anne Viney-Evans in 1839; they had no children.  You can read many of Disraeli’s work free on Gutenberg.

                                The Disraeli Bowl Chart

Dr. Jones calls the Disraeli map a Bowl Temperament Type.  When creating his types, Jones does not use the Ascendant, Midheaven or Part of Fortune just the layout of nine planets;  and Pluto was not discovered in Disraeli’s  lifetime & so ignored.  Jones says that this personality type shows Disraeli’s power of “self-containment” and its tilt, heavily towards the Eastern or Resourceful side of the chart, indicates his power of recovery and the need for completion in his efforts.

Winstar Express, Matrix Astrology

His hidden i.e. intercepted  “cutting planet”  Mars 19.06 Leo, “Zuni sun worshippers” conjunct the Moon, highlighting the idea of fidelity to one’s group identity supplements this idea and shows up throughout his public and private life.

As his cutting planet is conjunct his Moon, also intercepted, in the ninth house it suggests that Disrael’s life and actions were open to others and a matter of pulic attenion and record.  It also tells us, that as a scooping bowl, Disraeli is more of  a taker in life’s bounty and less of a giver.

                                                   An Ascendant Stellium

2017-02-15_16-57-40Disraeli’s Ascendant at 28.10 Scorpio is the Hyperion Symbol of a “Carpenter’s Measuring Tape” highlighting Disraeli’s conformity to standards. He was head of the Tory – Conservative party, ensuring that integrity was adhered. It also picks up on our featured image, reproduced here, from a Punch comic where we see Disraeli measuring the British Lion, their emblem, out for their new Disraeli-designed attire.

Historically, according to Nicholas DeVore, the Galactic Center was placed at 0 Capricorn, making Disraeli’s ascendant a degree away, and perhaps encouraging him to see himself as the center of his universe.  AS PM of the most popwerful country on earth at the time, that would be an easy metaphor.

We speculate that the the stellium itself supports that point:  Neptune 26.53  Scorpio is right next to Jupiter (26 Scorpio)  and his Ascendant, where Disraeli’s loyalty was towards his Queen and country — his duty to both (Neptune was discovered  the year he married the rich widow and the beginning of his break with his mentor Sir Robert Peel) and not the pandering toady  as was joked (see the “Beckonsfield mispronunciation joke).  Yet success in public affairs was everything to Disraeli (the Ascendant sextile the Midheaven and square the Moon, which is conjunct Mars thus creating a spirit of firm determination) and he pursued it with laser-like ferocity.

excerpted from Wilfrid Meynell’s biography of the Earl, 1903

So what’s the Line Prime Minister?

Disraeli’s  Line of Personality, sextiling of Saturn 15.05 Libra and Jupiter 25.24 Scorpio that shows his instinctive reflex in social situations while his Line of Culture, the only other planetary pair the PM has, is also sextile, giving him a facility with words; hence his extensive oeuvre of published manuscripts.

As a last note, his Part of Fortune in the fourth house is noticeable as here “home” becomes emblematic of patriotism and country, which is how he performed his public service.  E. C. Chambers, in his Fixed Stars and Degrees of the Zodiac analyzed suggests that this is the ultimate ability to make a success out of tatters.  He notes that George Washington’s Venus shares that degree.mary ann viney.png

The Hyperion Symbol for 29.28 Pisces is the Nobel Prize, recognition of exceptional politician and literary work — he was a popular author.  Instead of a Nobel, not yet created, for Disraeli’s cordial relationship with the Queen, she awarded him the title of Earl of Beaconsfield so he could continue to serve Her Majesty in the House of Lords after his eventual defeat to Sir William Gladstone.

She did not confer a similar honor upon his successor.
