2001 & Stanley Kubrick

When Astrotheme has questions about a person’s birthtime  they give everyone the standard 12 o’clock high. For Kubrick that works out well, as he was born at 11:55 according to our rectification. Again, like Errol Flynn,  it was a movie that prompted this —   this time Room 237 the movie about a movie film, one of those cerebral talkies that are a akin to a literary discussion. For those who are not aficiandoes of the Shining, Room 237 is the mysterious room in the movie that the child Danny is told to avoid — at all costs.  For movie addicts, Room 237 is almost the Holy Grail — lots of inside baseball discussions about scenes, props etc.

I read the book last year and was amazed at how much was not there. I then checked some old book reviews and they panned it too — the book is just awful. What Kubrick does in that movie was what the book should have been. Nevertheless, Room 237 does give some good hidden meanings to the film like equating the American Indian slaughter to the Holocaust by pointing out all the Holocaust and Native American motifs throughout the film. It’s definitely a film goers film.  (Here’s one hint — all the luggage piled up helter skelter in the lobby like the baggage that was thrown off the trains by the Jews arriving at the death camps.  Another is the Navajo sand paintings that decorate the lobby.)

th

Other popular movies by him are Spartacus with Kirk Douglas,  Dr. Strangelove,  2001:  A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacke, Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut with Tom Cruise.

                                                                              The Kubrick Chart

As or Kubrick’s chart, Uranus in the Sixth is rather apropos for him as he was unique and idiocyncratic.  Saturn in the second house makes sense as he wasthe scion of a wealthy family in the Bronx – unlike Ralph Lauren’s family also in the borough, but  who had less money. Next in the Tenth House is Venus + the Sun a propitious aspect for a director; actors and actresses tend to have just Venus. the Sun there gives Kubrick a stronger  willful attitude towards the industry — sort of like Orson Wellles — the enfant terrible of the 1940’s. Jupiter in the Seventh House shows a lot of marriages — he had four.

the shining art.jpg

As for his temperament type, Kubrick yearns to be a Splash but he only has two out of the requisite three oppositions.  Next up is the Fanhandle, that does have the required midpoint at the top of the chart and really does resemble a bucket but really Kubrick’s Southern bowl is more of a bundle — everything is closely tied up together full of energy and inversion.  So choosing the Fan pattern for Kubric, we see that the two distinct p;oints in the second house vy for notice against the other eight.  The handle is forever focusing Kubrick’s energies, telling us with the Moon right on the first hosue cusp the pressure he felt of having to be better and quicker and more symbolic than anyone else in the industry while Saturn on the near the third, his desire to make his father proud with his accomplishments as well as getting peers accolade.

Well if he was worried about the latter, Room 237 would solve that problem but then with Neptune conjunct Regulus in the eleventh house of publicity, he knew that.

If you are a Kubrick fan or just love the movie,  watch Room 237 here.

Here’s a highlight of the movie for those who just are wondering. https://graphics8.nytimes.com/video/players/offsite/index.html?videoId=100000003370038

Mr. Mahoney never married. He told one interviewer that his love of theater was his family substitute, and he is godfather to the two actresses from Fraser, children. He is survived by a sister, Rita Sullivan.

Mr. Mahoney was never fond of being interviewed. “I would rather walk across broken glass,” he told a reporter for The Chicago Tribune in 1996.He was not crazy about Hollywood, either, and spent as much time as possible in Chicago, his adopted hometown, which he praised for its combination of culture and Midwestern friendliness.

Mahoney was a bucket with Moon handle and had a preponderance in Cancer. He has a Mystic Rectangle, something I have found that predominates amongst progressives. {See E. G. Marshall’s chart on this.]

It would seem that this timing coincides with his Second saturn return as the progressed chart shows his ascendant’s lord in the eighth house of death which overlayed to his natal gives us an square showing the crrentl tension in his life and the need to do something new.  His ascendant concurs as it is also in the Eighth House of Sagittarius squared his Uranus and Mars giving him a strong need to express himself.

Gabriel Day-Lewis and Sir Daniel

Saturn is strong in his naturn chart, not only his ascendant but the handle of his bucket composition giving him a strong focal determinator there that directs his actions in unprovoked  ways.  It does make him suspicious of “outsiders” so that his lack of disclosure about his reasons is not out of character — he prefers to keep the world at arm’s length and since he has a many planets in the Northern hemisphere, despite his acting, he is an introverted person.  This is not uncommon in performers, Jack Benny, & Carol Burnett both had this setup in their natal charts though in neither case would have any one guessed.

His Neptune is conjunct his midheaven and opposite his Sun ensuring that whatever his next act is, it will be one that shows his depicts his social obligation in profound and “mystical” ways.

The AgBox of Sonny Perdue

Who is Sonny Perdue?

Sonny Perdue, no relation to Frank and his chickens, is the United States Secretary of Agriculture since 2017 and grew up in  a farming family in Bonaire, Georgia. His cousin, David Perdue, recently ran for re-election for the United States Senate for Georgia against a challenge from Jon Ossoff, and lost.

Sonny, born George Ervin Perdue III on December 20, 1946, time unknown, was rectified to a Cancer 04 ascendant, that has the symbol of “a young boy learning the importance of moksha”, also called “mukti.” Moksha embodies the Hindu concept of ultimate freedom and liberation deriving its meaning from mukt or (Sanskrit) “liberation,” i.e. release from the life-death cycle (samsara) of mundane existence. It is also akin the Buddhist concept of nirvana, and often the terms are interchangeably used; but there is a major difference — Hindus believe nirvana is attained only after achieving moksha, while Buddhists believes that moksha is an end in itself.

Perdue has a sixth house heavy chart showing his dedication to farm animals and service. His chart is interesting because it has a bowl opposition between the Sun in Sagittarius and Uranus in Gemini making him a Mars bucket, but on the other hand. one could easily argue that Mr. Perdue is a see-saw temperament because of the rather neat division between the hemisphere right at the fourth house nadir. This is a chart where reading the whole thing, and not just looking at the layout, helps determine his temperament type.

Who is Sonny

Sonny is an  agribusinessman, veterinarian, state legislator, and former 81st governor of Georgia. More recently he has been touring 30 farm states since his confirmation to hear what farmers have to say.

35287530266_14d3acd877_z.jpg

“People believe that folks in Washington D.C. had stopped listening to rural America over the years,” Perdue said of those who came out to his town hall meetings… In fields, dairy barns, machine sheds and front yards, thousands of people turned out for town hall meetings to express their frustrations and offer suggestions.”

Sonny Perdue at his confirmation hearings.

What came out of those meetings is his idea of an AgBox, similar to the 1970’s handouts of cheese, milk and butter to food stamp recipients, except that the AgBox would be  a package of “nutritious, 100-percent U.S. grown and produced food. ” It would contain nonperishable items like shelf-stable milk, cereal, peanut butter, canned meat, fruits and vegetables but it would replace half of those recipients’ food monthly benefits.  How this would be implemented is still under discussion.

                                  The appeal of Sonny

Perdue is a fairly easy going fellow as the division in his chart shows. His Uranus is conjunct Vice President Pence’s Sun, telling us he is more tech-savvy than he lets on — he knows how to use it well though does not openly push the platform. His wife, Mary Ruff, shows up at Venus 20 Scorpio 15, and Perdue has mentioned her as the secret to his success, and also the mother to his four children (Jupiter 18 Scorpio 19).

He has an interesting yod point from his midheaven at 17 Pisces 11 to Uranus. Its foot is at Jupiter 18 Scorpio in the sixth highlighting his varied interest and social duty, and the apex ricochets back to the first house at his first house cusp of 17 Gemini 11 getting the symbol of a “Mechanics toolbox,” highlighting his practicality who uses social engagement as one of the tools to make things work.

This of course highlights his practical application of Uranus towards social problem, showing that while he could have done his tour virtually and just talked on the phone or used Skyped, instead, Secretary Perdue needs to utilize both methods: telecommunications and hands on seeing is believing to make sure that the messenger is relaying the problems accurately — many people cannot vocally express the problem to the ether as well as they can to someone who presses their flesh and stares them in the eye. That has been the not so secret ingredient in politics, and particularly American politics, since the Republic was formed.

Superdyke: Barbara Hammer

Barbara Hammer was born into the film industry of Hollywood, California, because her grandfather was a cook for the director, D. W. Griffith. She got a bachelor’s degree in psychology at University of California Los Angeles and then a master’s degree in English literature.  After walking out on her husband, Hammer realized her calling and studied film at San Francisco State University and got inspired to do a photologue of her personal development and love affairs as a lesbian.  You can see many of them here.  Our header image is of Ms. Hammer from “Superdyke meets Madame X,” one of her shorts.

We have rectified Ms. Hammer birth chart from the stated 12:45 to forty five minutes later, giving her the ascendant of 21 Virgo that has the Hyperion meaning of “healing messages left at a temple of the future.”  McClung writes that this symbol is one of accepting the spiritual rite of healing  and the patience to wait for the certain time until its arrival heralds a dawn of all-potentiality with a keyword of “Foresight.”  Conjunct  her first house cusp is Neptune; it is also exact her ascendant showing the strong masculine urges in her that needs to be let free and unfettered.

Neptune is then opposite her Jupiter which begins  a plethora of planets in Aries and Taurus starting in the seventh house and ending only at ninth but conjunct her Midheaven, showing how her exploration of her sexuality and individuality was an extension of her love, her beliefs and the intense animation of herself on film.  Watching on film, one senses enthusiastic appreciation of the partnerships she encounters and the various opportunities these partnerings give her.  (Jupiter at 0 Aries in the seventh house of Pisces).

map of the Catskills

Her Grand Trine is made of her Neptune, Mars and Sun a strong trinity of masculine planets found in predominantly feminine signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Capricorn) integrating her sexuality fully.

Ms. Hammer is a locomotive temperament type with her greatest open area in the West, highlighting how leadership was thrust upon her even when it was unexpected.  In her early films she bemoans how her films are eclipsing her painting, now that she is 78 years old, her films are her art and her painting is something she does with the lens not the brush.  Like most locomotives, she prefers to get involved with her partners totally and in SuperDyke, Madame X notes that she is alive only for the camera and X worries that she is being manipulated for the film.  If so, she would not be the first muse to be so…nor probably the last.vintage postcard of the town.

Ms. Hammer lives in  Kerhonkson, New York in the Catskills.  Her website is here.

Rose McGowan, Harvey Weinstein and Jill Messick

                                                Mapping Ms. Messick

The most notable planets is the Moon-Saturn partile conjunction in the Ninth House of reputation or popularly called “long journeys” at 13 Aries that has the Sabian Symbol of “A bomb that has failed to explode is now safely hidden from discovery.”  The Moon with its denotations of home and family, and Saturn of career and work in the house of reputation highlight how much her work ethic and personal reputation were an integral part of person.  Skipping to the hypothetical death chart, we see that her current Midheaven is in opposition to that pairing and suggests that she truly felt that her career and life, so intertwined in her person, was over.

The Moon-Saturn pair is then squared to the hypothetical Pluto on the cusp of the Seventh house of partners and relationships.  Pluto is stressed here, and as a generational planet, highlights how Ms. Messick saw no way out of this crisis — she felt it was haunt her forever in Tinseltown and her relationships with her clients, built on trust and cooperation, was irrevocably broken as it is also in opposition to her Ascendant.

In her birth chart, Pluto is opposite the dynamic duo of Moon-Saturn and conjunct Venus.  While we do not know this to be true, this would hint that the bulk of her clients were female actors (conjunct Uranus — electronic media).  Her Part of Fortune is at 25 Scorpio in the fifth house with the symbol of  “An xray machine in operation and so  a keen diagnosis occurs, ” suggests that a lot of her career success was made based on her personal judgement, hence the personal blow over the McGowan-Weinstein brouhaha.

You can download the chart for Ms Jill messick’s birth-suicide.   The death chart is just a guess — hence our calling it “hypothetical.”  Our sincere condolences to her famiy and friends, whom we trust were many.

The Harvey Weinstein scandal took a tragic turn when Rose McGowan’s former manager committed suicide after becoming “collateral damage in an already horrific story” surrounding the mogul’s battle with the actress.

Jill Messick, a 50-year-old mother of two, worked as McGowan’s manager in 1997, when McGowan has claimed she was raped by Weinstein. Messick then went on to work at Weinstein’s Miramax until 2003, producing “She’s All That” and “Frida.” She committed suicide on Wednesday after battling depression and bipolar disorder for years, her family said.

In a blistering statement, Messick’s family also said she struggled with being drawn into the McGowan-Weinstein battle.

“Seeing her name in headlines again and again, as part of one person’s attempt to gain more attention for her personal cause, along with Harvey’s desperate attempt to vindicate himself, was devastating . . . It broke Jill”     ——New York Post.

Depersonalizing the occult Gail Fairfield

Astrologer Gail Fairfield in her book Choice Centered Astrology states her parents were missionaries to Foochow, one of the five treaty ports opened wholly to the West, and where she was born on February 27, 1950 at 3:52 PM. She has written several books on the tarot and astrology and is a student of astrologer Joanne Wickenburg, winner of Marc Edmund Jones scholarship award, whose major work was on astrological Interceptions.

 Mapping Gail

Fairfield’s ascendant is 26 Scorpio 35 or the Hyperion Symbol of a blackbird whistling highlighting her ability to see things that other people cannot and enjoy the subtlety of the experience; its keyword is an enigma.

Gavin McClung writes that the poem, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, read in the video above by its author, Wallace Stevens1 and written in 1917 was the inspiration for this degree, which coincidentally favours occult tendencies. Her Jupiter in Aquarius conjunct Mercury bestows an “electric intelligence” that can see and perceive connections before anyone else notices.

Foochow anchorage, unknown Chinese painter c. 1870

A Splash temperament with few conjunctions (blind spots), some oppositions (awareness) with her Northern hemisphere slant ties this together forcing her to overcome her reclusive tendencies for her career (Saturn in Virgo in the Tenth) and reach out beyond her small circle into the world at large to express her singular view on the occult tradition. Her few oppositions are striking though they help bridging the two separate parts of her See-saw temperament.

One such opposition is between Pluto in the Ninth and Mercury highlight how her long distance travels and good education have given her a penetrating awareness of gender/racial/class/age constructs in language — something in both her astrology and tarot books she seeks to avoid.

I worked with a number of mythologies that described the Major Arcana (in Tarot) as a system and became dissatisfied with each one in turn. I have realized that for me, the greater mysteries of the universe go beyond any one mythology or ordering system. Many of the stories are effective as triggers that can help us remember what the cards mean, but too often we get caught up in the limitation of those stores and forget that the myth was just created to help us with our memories. We see the myth as the only truth.

Gail Fairfield, Everyday Tarot, a choice-centered tarot, Red Wheel/Weiser LLC. copyright 2002

In that brief clip, we see how her three conjunctions, all at Trine points, give her ability to always see the choices in life via her penetrating awareness of the limitations of the current rage of one-dimensional decks but it is also a key point to her writings on the two subjects. She insists this myopic trend gives a false hope of nirvana to readers, as they become locked in another’s viewpoint and slowly get cut off from other deeper implications of the tarot, or for that matter, planets and asteroids in astrology.

1895 FooChow penny stamp

If you ever read one of Gail’s books, and I hope you do, at least keep that admonition in mind as it maybe just the tonic for seeing Jupiter not only as enthusiasm but also as a “seeker”2 and thus a desire for the quest for power and money or even perhaps someone who goes into politics or the law to seek social justice.

Sabian Aspects

  • Gail’s Mental Chemistry is perceptive but cautious. Gail may see trends ahead of time but she tends to keep those ideas close to her vest and wait for confirmation.
  • She is a Splash temperament type and tends to be people-centric, particularly if she is in charge.
  • Her Line of Motivation is sesquiquadrate.
  • Her Line of Vitality is absent.
  • Her Line of Efficiency is inconjunct.
  • Her Life of Culture is absent, highlighting her lack of interest in making an effect on society at large. Instead she is more interested in her own circle of friends, family and associates.
  • She has a marked Air emphasis that shows her missionary zeal towards her Choice-Centered approach and has written books on the subject: two on the tarot and one astrology. She writes what she she feels very strongly about, and has the need to communicate this to others.

Other Aspects – Configurations

Other aspects Gail has is a Rosetta Stone. This is rather new configuration created by Sally Fisher and Linda Shelnutt which is made like a yod but instead of the two planets in sextile pointing to a third that is mutually inconjunct, a Rosetta Stone aspect has two planets that are trine each other and inconjunct the third; obviously this aspect does not show up often.

With the Rosetta Stone, problems bounce off the individual but never to find closure! For Gail the Rosetta is comprised of Uranus in the eleventh, Mars in the third and Venus in the sixth, so she is also searching for an astrological solution but never happy with the results, and so continues her exploration. The abundance of Air in her chart probably contributes heavily to this miasma.

The other unique configuration Gail has is Thor’s Hammer. This one is composed of the Moon to Mercury to Mars. Alice Portman, an Australian astrologer based in Adelaide, gets the nod for this aspect which again is similar to the yod. This time the two planets are squared (ninety degrees apart) to each other and both make a sesquiquadrate aspect (135 degrees) to a third planet. Another aspectual rara avis. Portman says that the Thor’s Hammer is a harsh aspect with the native having little patience for excuses, why you need an aspect to tell you this, is another question.
